Round 1 of UNM-PNM math contest draws more than 400 participants

Albuquerque Hosts Thriving Unm-Pnm Math Contest With Over 400 Participants

Record-Breaking Participation Marks the Competition’s Comeback

The UNM-PNM Statewide High School Mathematics Contest has kicked off its 2025-2026 season with impressive enthusiasm, drawing 449 students from 35 schools across New Mexico for its first round. Conducted at 17 testing sites statewide, nearly 97% of participants engaged in person at locations including Albuquerque, Deming, and Las Cruces, showcasing a strong recovery in attendance post-pandemic.

Encouraging Young Mathematicians

This annual contest, a collaborative effort between the University of New Mexico’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and PNM, aims to foster a love for mathematics among students from grades 5 through 12. The event not only tests mathematical skills but also emphasizes creativity and problem-solving abilities, moving beyond traditional rote memorization.

Advancement to Round 2

As a result of their performance, nearly 200 students have qualified for Round 2, scheduled for February 14, 2026, at the University of New Mexico. This round will feature a public lecture by Elizabeth Gross, an associate professor from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, who specializes in algebraic geometry and its applications in biology.

Organizational Efforts and Community Support

Professor Monika Nitsche, chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department, expressed gratitude towards the co-directors, Professors James Degnan and Stephen Lau, as well as advisor Cristina Pereyra, for their dedication to expanding the contest’s reach and improving in-person participation. The contest has a rich history, with its origins dating back to 1966 as the New Mexico Mathematics Contest, evolving through various name changes and sponsorships since 1997.

Long-Term Impact on Math Education

The contest has traditionally attracted between 700 and 1,200 participants in peak years, and organizers are optimistic about rebuilding participation numbers following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. It serves as a vital platform for recognizing excellence in mathematics and encourages students to develop their skills in a supportive environment.

Broader Trends in Mathematics Education

The positive turnout at this year’s contest reflects an increasing interest in mathematics competitions within New Mexico. Complementary events, such as the New Mexico Math Meet for middle school students and the Governor’s STEM Challenge, further illustrate the vibrant ecosystem supporting mathematics education in the state.

Support for the UNM-PNM contest is welcomed from various community members and organizations, including Mu Alpha Theta and the American Mathematical Society, to ensure its sustainability for future generations.
