Leadership Transition Marks New Era for RRPS
In a historic moment for Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS), the Board of Education has appointed Dr. Robert “Robby” Dodd as the new superintendent, effective March 1, 2026. This decision comes as Dr. V. Sue Cleveland, the district’s founding leader, prepares to retire after a remarkable 31-year tenure.
Dr. Dodd’s Background and Vision
Dr. Dodd currently serves as the Director of School Leadership and Improvement for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. His extensive experience in education and leadership, combined with a strong commitment to community engagement, positions him as a fitting successor to Dr. Cleveland. At the board meeting where his appointment was announced, Dodd expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the board and the community, stating, “Together, we can invent a future where Rio Rancho can be looked to as a national model for public education.”
A Rigorous Selection Process
The search for a new superintendent began in October 2025 following Dr. Cleveland’s retirement announcement. The process attracted 31 candidates and involved a series of community engagement events to ensure public input on the selection. On December 17, 2025, after careful consideration, Dr. Dodd emerged as the unanimous choice among the board members, who praised his genuine people skills and commitment to equity, particularly for minority and low-income students.
Community Support and Transition Plans
During his introductory press conference, Dodd highlighted the importance of building relationships within the community and the school district. He plans to visit schools immediately upon his arrival to connect with staff and students, emphasizing a “school-centered leadership” approach. Dr. Cleveland, who has been a central figure in the district’s growth from 7 schools and 5,900 students to 21 schools serving over 16,500 students, has pledged to support Dodd in this transition.
