Brave the Cold: Albuquerque’s Annual Polar Plunge Returns This Saturday

Albuquerque is set to kick off the New Year with the highly anticipated annual Polar Plunge, taking place on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at the Sierra Vista Pool. The event promises a day of frosty fun, encouraging participants to take a daring dip into chilly waters for a good cause.

Event Schedule and Details

The Polar Plunge will open its doors at 9:45 a.m., with the first plunge scheduled for 11 a.m. and a second opportunity at 11:30 a.m. Participants can choose between a direct plunge into the pool or sliding down a fun water slide. Whether you go solo or with a partner, the event is designed to be a thrilling experience for all ages.

Participation Costs

Entry fees are affordable and support community programs:

  • $40 for an individual direct plunge into the water
  • $50 for the slide option
  • $60 for a duo plunge into the water
  • $80 for the duo slide option

Prizes will be awarded for various categories, including the youngest and oldest plungers, the largest family, the largest group, and the best costume, enhancing the competitive spirit of the event.

Supporting Local Causes

Proceeds from the Polar Plunge directly benefit the Shanta Strong Swim Fund, which provides free swim lessons to children in Albuquerque. This initiative aims to promote water safety and prevent drowning, a significant concern in the community.

Additionally, funds will support the ABQ BioPark Zoo’s enrichment programs for polar bears and penguins, ensuring these animals engage in stimulating activities that reflect their natural behaviors. This effort not only enhances animal welfare but also raises awareness about conservation efforts for polar species.

A Tradition of Community Spirit

Polar Plunge events have become a cherished winter tradition across the nation, originating from the Special Olympics in 1991. They foster community spirit and raise funds for local causes. In Albuquerque, this year’s plunge reflects a commitment to both fun and philanthropy, appealing to residents, local business owners, and tourists alike.
