As New Year’s Eve approaches, law enforcement agencies in Albuquerque are intensifying measures to combat drinking and driving. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), New Mexico State Police (NMSP), and the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) are collaborating on enhanced sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout the holiday season.

Data-Driven Enforcement Strategies

According to BCSO Lt. Trevor Weeks, the initiative is aimed at protecting the community from the dangers associated with impaired driving. “When somebody makes that bad decision to get behind the wheel while they’re drunk, they could cause a crash and hurt or kill somebody,” Weeks stated, emphasizing the community-wide impact of these incidents.

The APD will focus its resources in areas with the highest rates of DWI crashes, utilizing statistical data to identify hotspots for enforcement. Lt. Lawrence Monte of the APD explained, “We will look at maps with provided through, like, a statistical data analysis to essentially, like, hone in on what area of the city we’re going to focus enforcement on.”
