Africana Studies hosts Black History Month Kick-off Brunch Jan. 31

Join the Celebration: Unm’s Black History Month Kick-Off Brunch Set for January 31

A Time-Honored Tradition

The University of New Mexico’s Africana Studies Department will host its 41st annual Black History Month Kick-off Brunch on January 31, 2026. This cherished event will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Union Building Ballrooms, marking the beginning of a month dedicated to celebrating the contributions and history of African Americans.

Keynote Address by Councilor Nichole Rogers

This year, the brunch will feature a notable keynote speaker, Councilor Nichole Rogers, the first African American woman elected to the Albuquerque City Council. Rogers is known for her commitment to community engagement and her efforts to address pressing local issues, such as housing and public safety, ensuring that the voices of Albuquerque residents are central to her work.

Event Details and Accessibility

Tickets for the brunch are priced at $50 for general admission, with a discounted rate of $25 available for students. This pricing structure emphasizes the event’s focus on accessibility for UNM students, alumni, and the broader community. The theme for this year’s event is “Rooted in Legacy, Rising in Purpose: The Power of Participatory Change,” reflecting the ongoing importance of community-driven progress.

Significance of Black History Month

Black History Month, observed each February, has its roots in the early 20th century when historian Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926 to spotlight African American achievements that were often overlooked in educational curricula. The kick-off brunch at UNM aligns with the national theme, promoting discussions on legacy and activism.

Community Engagement and Programming

The Africana Studies Department, along with the African American Student Services, will spearhead various activities throughout February, including lectures, performances, and additional brunches designed to engage the community deeply. These efforts not only honor the past but also educate and foster dialogue on contemporary issues facing the African American community in New Mexico.
