Raymon Joseph Tavarez, lovingly known as “RJ” and by his wrestling persona “Ray Basura,” passed away at the age of 35 on December 13, 2025. Born on January 17, 1990, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Ray had called Albuquerque home since 2010. His sudden departure has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the community he cherished.
A Multifaceted Life
Ray’s life was marked by creativity and passion. He was a professional wrestler for ten years, captivating audiences with his athleticism and charisma. Ray was part of the “Brute 66” tag team and made his mark in local promotions like Phase 1 Pro and Off The Ropes Wrestling. After retiring from the ring in 2020, he remained an integral part of the wrestling community, serving as a mentor, merchandise designer, and consultant.
Creative Ventures
Beyond wrestling, Ray was a talented artist. He created pet portrait paintings and graphic designs that resonated with many, leading to a successful small business. His creativity extended to his role as the practice manager at the Albuquerque Cat Clinic, where he fostered a supportive environment for staff and clients alike since 2017.
Community Impact
Ray’s contributions to Albuquerque’s vibrant culture were numerous. He managed Albukaraoque, a live karaoke band led by his wife Valeria, helping to enhance the local music scene. His belief in the value of community was evident in all he did, whether through his artistic endeavors or his support of others in the wrestling and veterinary fields.

To remember and celebrate Ray’s life, an informal gathering will be held at Marble Brewery Downtown in Albuquerque on December 20, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This event will provide a space for friends and family to share cherished memories and stories of a man who brought joy and laughter to those around him.
Survived by Loved Ones
Raymon Tavarez is survived by his devoted wife Valeria, his parents Mary, Ray, and Darla, his sisters Latisha (husband Brent) and Jessica (and her children), chosen sister Rachelle (husband James), as well as his nana Charlotte and many cousins. His warmth, kindness, and infectious smile will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
