Santa choppers in with presents for kids at UNM Hospital

Santa Soars in With Holiday Cheer for Kids at Unm Hospital

Annual Tradition Brings Joy to Young Patients

In a heartwarming display of holiday spirit, Santa Claus made his annual visit to the University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital on December 18, 2025, arriving via helicopter. This festive event, organized by UNM Health System staff, aims to uplift young patients who will be spending the holidays in the hospital.

Santa’s Grand Arrival

The event featured Santa landing dramatically on the hospital grounds, courtesy of the UNM Lifeguard Air Emergency Services. This service, known for its critical medical transport, doubles as Santa’s sleigh for this special occasion, allowing him to spread joy in a unique way.

Gifts and Cheer in the Pediatric Playroom

Upon landing, Santa proceeded to the festively decorated pediatric playroom on the sixth floor, where he greeted children and posed for photos. Each child received a personalized gift, including stuffed animals and toys. One young patient, Lexi Hargrave, who is undergoing treatment for Stage 4 neuroblastoma, received a stuffed puppy that resembled her pet at home. Her father, Brad, expressed gratitude for the visit, noting how meaningful it was for Lexi and her family to reconnect with Santa during such a challenging time.

Community Support and Emotional Impact

The event is not just about gifts; it plays a crucial role in providing emotional support to families facing difficult circumstances. Felecia Martinez, who coordinates the event, emphasized that many children in the hospital during the holidays feel isolated. “We really like to encourage Santa to come and spread that Christmas cheer,” she said, highlighting the importance of reminding kids that they are loved, no matter where they are.

Building Community Connections

The holiday season can be particularly tough for families dealing with serious illnesses. The support from community organizations, including donors like Albertsons, helps make events like this possible. Families often share messages of kindness and resilience, reinforcing the idea that they are not alone in their struggles.

A Legacy of Holiday Cheer

Since 2016, Santa has been making these special visits to both the UNM Children’s Hospital and UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center. The tradition has grown, with Santa humorously noting his love for local treats like biscochitos, further endearing him to the community.

As families gather during this festive season, the joy brought by Santa’s visit reminds everyone of the importance of kindness and support. Every gesture, big or small, contributes to a sense of togetherness and hope for those in need.
